I've been having a blast this weekend tweaking my new Motorola Q phone. The Q runs Windows Mobile 5, so customizing it just comes with the territory.
On the top of the list, creating my own home screen and color scheme (click the image on the right to enlarge). My favorite mods also include:
Did I mention editing the home screen?? Look! ---->- home screen code: joe.full.home.xml
- color scheme: joe.scheme.xml
- Installing PHM RegEdit, which lets you edit the registry of the phone (just like the Windows Registry for all you geeks out there). Q Registry tweaks:
- Performance tweaks: GlyphCache, FATFS Cache and IE tweaks
- Make Start screen display as a list: Start Menu shown as list
- Phone Ident Tweak: Ident registry tweak
- Installing CE Remote Display, part of the Windows Mobile Power Toys package, which lets you view and control Q display (or other Windows CE/Mobile devices) from your ActiveSync connected PC or laptop. (Nice for taking screen shots of the Q.)
- The Q is bluetooth enabled, so part of the fun was getting ActiveSync to synchronize my 500+ Outlook Contacts and who knows how many Calendar appointments over the air and into the Q, using a new BlueTake BT007Si Bluetooth USB adapter. (Which worked great, by the way.)
During all of this time, I've been prowling the QUsers forums, looking for hints and tricks and trying to avoid any pitfalls. So far: Tweaks: many. Pitfalls: very few.
I've been using the Samsung i600 (Windows SmartPhone 2002) for a couple of years now, but ever since the RAZR came out, I've been having a bit of phone envy. I'm a little disappointed I couldn't get a BlueTooth-enabled, Windows Mobile flip-phone from Verizon, but what I got instead was Level 2 gadget compression: phone, PDA AND digital camera (1.3MPx) in one device. Sweeeet.
